어두운 비 내리는 저녁, 한 대의 차가 덜컹이며 정비소 앞에 멈춰 섰다.

엔진룸에서는 불규칙한 떨림이 뼛속까지 전해졌다. 그 순간, 계기판 위의 경고등이 미친 듯이 점멸했다.

차주는 안색이 창백했다.
“탐정님… 갑자기 엔진 경고등이 깜박이더니, 차가 부르르 떨리기 시작했어요."

나는 잠시 차를 바라보다가, 마치 범인을 지켜보듯 낮게 중얼거렸다.
“ 몇번 실린더일까 ?… 이건 우연이 아니야.”

책상 위 수첩에 용의자들이 하나씩 적혀 나갔다.
점화 플러그, 점화 코일, 연료 인젝터, 압축 불량, 심지어 센서까지…

탐정의 손길은 차분했다.
점화 코일을 옮겨 꽂자, 미스파이어는 다른 실린더로 이동했다. 퍼즐은 완성됐다.

“범인은 네 놈이었군… 2번 실린더의 점화 코일.”

신품으로 교체하자, 엔진의 떨림은 마치 거짓말처럼 사라졌다. 경고등은 꺼지고, 어둡던 밤에 작은 안도의 빛이 비쳤다.

차주는 떨리는 목소리로 물었다.
“탐정님… 이제 괜찮은 건가요?”

나는 담담히 대답했다.
“이번 사건은 단순했지만, 만약 방치했다면 촉매까지 타버렸을 거요. 이제 안심하고 달려도 됩니다.”

그렇게 또 하나의 미스터리가 풀렸다. 그러나 정비 탐정의 수첩은 아직 텅 비어 있지 않았다. 어둠 속에는 늘 새로운 사건이 기다리고 있었다.

A rainy evening. A car staggered into the garage, shaking with every beat of its failing heart.

From under the hood came a harsh, uneven rhythm. On the dashboard, the check engine light flashed like an urgent SOS.

The driver’s face was pale.
“Detective… the warning light started flashing, and the whole car began to shudder. ’”

I watched the trembling car in silence, then whispered as though addressing the culprit itself:
“which Cylinder is misfire? … this is no coincidence.”

One by one, the suspects lined up in my notebook:
Spark plug, ignition coil, fuel injector, low compression, faulty sensors…

Calmly, I began the tests. I swapped the ignition coil, and the misfire followed to another cylinder. The puzzle snapped into place.

“So it was you all along… the ignition coil of Cylinder No.2.”

With a new coil installed, the engine’s rough tremor melted away. The warning light dimmed, and a small light of relief returned to the driver’s eyes.

His voice trembled as he asked:
“Detective… is it safe now?”

I nodded.
“This case was simple, but had it been ignored, it could have burned out your catalytic converter. Now, you can drive in peace.”

Another mystery solved. But my notebook is far from empty. In the shadows of the workshop, more cases always wait.

도심의 밤, 가로등 불빛 아래로 떨리는 차가 천천히 들어왔다.
“탐정님, 기어를 R이나 D에 넣을 때마다 차가 심하게 떨려요. 신호받고 출발할 때도 그렇고… 밤이면 더 심해서 시동이 꺼질 것 같아요.”
차주는 이어서 말했다.
“스로틀 바디 청소를 했더니 조금 나아졌어요. 완전히 낫진 않았지만, 변속할 때 RPM이 올라갔다가 떨어지더라구요.”
용의자는 금세 머릿속에 떠올랐다:
아이들 제어기, 스로틀 바디 적응값, 흡기 누설, MAF 오염, 전기 부하, 점화·연료, 마운트, 변속기 부하 제어…

Case Reception 
In the quiet city night, under the pale glow of streetlights, a trembling car rolled in.
“Detective, whenever I shift into Reverse or Drive, the car shakes badly. At stoplights, when I start moving, it’s worse. And at night… it feels like the engine will stall.”
The owner added:
“I cleaned the throttle body. It helped a bit, but now when shifting, the RPM rises and then falls. It’s better, but not perfect.”
The suspects lined up in my mind:
Idle speed controller, throttle adaptation, intake leaks, dirty MAF, electrical load, ignition or fuel, mounts, even transmission load control…

스모크 테스트, 배터리·접지 점검, IAC 청소와 스로틀 재학습… 하나씩 사건의 퍼즐이 맞춰졌다.

Worse at night → check charging system and grounding.
Incomplete after throttle cleaning → perform proper idle relearn.
RPM flare → inspect gear position signal and delayed idle compensation.
Shaking under specific load → check engine/transmission mounts.
Smoke test, battery and ground cleaning, IAC service, throttle relearn — the puzzle slowly came together.

결말 
시운전 결과, 기어 체결 시의 심한 떨림은 크게 줄었다. 밤에도 예전처럼 꺼질 듯 위태롭지 않았다. RPM이 잠깐 오르내리긴 했지만 곧 안정되었다.
나는 차주에게 설명했다.
“밤에 더 심했던 건, 전기 부하가 커져서 엔진이 힘들었기 때문입니다. 스로틀 청소 후에는 ECU가 공기량을 다시 학습해야 하죠. 오늘은 학습을 완료했으니 훨씬 안정될 겁니다.”

Resolution 
On the test drive, the violent shudder on gear engagement was gone. Even under the heavy electrical load of the night, the engine no longer stumbled. The RPM still flared briefly, but quickly settled into calm rhythm.
I told the owner:
“At night, the electrical load drags the idle speed down — that’s why it felt worse. After cleaning the throttle body, the ECU needs time to relearn airflow. Now that the adaptation is complete, the engine should remain stable.”
Another case closed, though many mysteries still linger in the detective’s notebook…

 5 : 기름의 눈물

오늘의 의뢰는 “차 밑에 항상 오일 자국이 남는다”는 신고였다.
차주는 세차 후에도, 주차장을 옮겨도, 어김없이 검은 얼룩이 바닥에 번지는 것을 목격했다.

정비 탐정은 차량을 들어 올리고 관찰을 시작했다.
엔진 작동 직후, 그 정체는 곧 드러났다.
오일이 방울로 맺혀 떨어지고 있었던 것!

하지만 수상했다.
로커 커버 가스켓 같은 곳은 그저 스며나오는 정도.
그러나 이곳은… 마치 울분을 토하듯 방울로 흘러내리고 있었다.

엔진을 멈추자, 오일 방울은 한동안 계속 떨어졌다.
그러다 서서히 멎었다.
“흐름이 아니라, 압력이 만든 눈물이군…”

탐정은 범인의 얼굴을 확인했다.
바로 오일 압력 센서.
세월에 지친 센서는 더 이상 압력을 견디지 못하고,
엔진이 힘차게 돌 때마다 오일을 흘리며 울고 있었던 것이다.

탐정은 마지막으로 중얼거렸다.

“엔진의 맥박을 지켜보던 감시자가,
이제는 스스로 눈물을 흘리며 고통을 알린 셈이지.
작은 센서 하나가, 이렇게 큰 흔적을 남기다니…”

 4 : The Silent Infiltrator

Today’s case began with a strange report:
“The passenger-side floor is always wet.”

At first, the owner dismissed it.
“Probably just water from my shoes on rainy days,” he thought.
But time revealed a darker truth—
the passenger mats, front and rear, never dried.

The smell told the story first.
Dampness became mold,
mold turned into a stale, choking stench.
Only then did the owner realize… something was wrong.

The Detective lifted the carpet and frowned.
Beneath it lay a hidden reservoir—
water pooling silently, seeping, evaporating,
then returning again and again,
slowly conquering the car from within.

“No dripping sounds, no obvious traces…
This culprit prefers stealth over speed.”

His gaze shifted upward, to the sunroof.
At a glance, it looked flawless.
But when water was poured in,
it stagnated instantly—refusing to drain.
The drain tube was completely clogged.

The lost rainwater had taken another path,
slipping unseen through body panels and insulation,
creeping its way down until it finally surfaced—
right on the passenger-side floor.

Clearing the blocked drain, the Detective muttered:

“It wasn’t just rainwater overflowing.
It was a patient enemy,
using time itself as a weapon…
a silent infiltrator.”

 # 3 : 사라진 힘의 미스터리

오늘의 의뢰는 고속도로 위에서 걸려왔다.
“차가 갑자기 힘을 잃었어요. 액셀을 밟아도 반응이 없고, 간신히 갓길에 세웠습니다.”

도망가는 범인을 뒤쫓듯, 나는 즉시 현장으로 달려갔다.
의뢰인의 얼굴엔 공포와 당혹이 뒤섞여 있었다. 고속도로에서 힘이 사라진다는 건, 마치 범죄자가 한밤중에 전등을 꺼버리는 것과 다름없으니까.

첫 번째 단서를 찾기위해 ....

시동을 걸어본다.

간신히 살아난 엔진은 숨 가쁘게, 숨을 내쉬었다.
RPM은 불안정했고, 배기구에선 미묘하게 퀘퀘한 냄새가 났다.

나는 생각했다.

• 혹시 연료 공급에 문제가 있는 건 아닐까?

• 아니면 점화 플러그가 제 역할을 못 하는 걸까?

힘을 앗아간 범인은 분명 가까이에 있었다.

하지만, 심증 뿐, 물증이 없어 몇가지 가설을 세워본다.

1. 연료 계통 문제

   • 연료 필터가 막히면, 고속 주행 시 순간적으로 공급이 부족해진다.

   • 연료 펌프가 약해져도 마찬가지다.

2. 점화 계통 문제

   • 플러그가 닳거나, 코일이 불량해도 출력이 급격히 떨어진다.

3. 흡기/배기 계통 문제

   • 공기 흐름이 막히거나, 배기라인이 손상되면 숨 막히듯 힘이 사라진다.

이렇게 용의자를 세 명으로 추리고,  하나씩 추궁하기로 했다.

서서히 드러나는 범인의 정체은

먼저, 연료 압력을 측정해보니 수치가 불안정했다.
연료 필터를 분리하자, 내부는 이미 잿빛 먼지로 가득 메워져 있었다.

진범은 바로 연료 필터.
그리고 동조한 약해진 연료 펌프가 공범이었다.
둘은 고속도로 위에서 차량의 숨통을 죄어왔던 것이다.

결국, 응급조치 후,  

연료 필터를 교체하고 펌프를 점검·보강하자, 엔진은 다시 힘차게 숨을 쉬기 시작했다.
의뢰인은 안도의 미소를 지으며 말했다.
“다시 살아났네요. 마치 심폐소생술을 받은 것 같아요.”

나는 속으로 중얼거렸다.
“자동차의 힘은 결코 그냥 사라지지 않아. 언제나 누군가가 그 뒤를 조종하고 있지.” 

이렇게, 또 하나의 미스터리가 풀렸다.

그러나 사건일지는 멈추지 않는다.
다음 범인은 이미, 차고의 어둠 속에서 기다리고 있을 테니까…
